EcoHawk Recycling?

One of the local bars in town says that they use, and toss out, 2500 bottles a WEEK. Plus another 1500 or so aluminum beer cans and drink cans. two other local establishments in town report similar usages, and wastage.

The idea came from Miami Beach, where a group is recycling the bottles and cans from 3 of the bars and restaurants there. A group of college students did a survey there and found the establishments to be receptive and cooperative. Since most of the college students are not of age to enter the bars, the businesses have agreed to put the bottles and cans outside in back in bins for pickup a couple times a week.

The Ecology Board here in town is looking into the possibility that the local high school students in the ecohawks Club would be interested in recycling those bottles and cans. The EcoHawks did an OUTSTANDING job at the River Cities festival and recycled about 15-16 cubic yards of recyclables then, double what the production was the year before. Any monies they would receive from the recycling at the bars and restaurants here in town would go toward their club, as a fundraiser.

The proposal has been made to the Ecohawks at this point but it is close to the end of the school year, etc. and they may not have enough time to put this project into effect before school is out this year. We shall see. actually ANY nonprofit, etc. could do this project ie Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, PTA, junior high club kids, setc. Times are tough and fundraising is difficult. This could provide a revenue stream from stuff that is regularly just thrown away. Somebody with a truck would probably be needed to haul the stuff to the recycling plant, and garbage bags would also be needed for the bins as a liner to make it easy to haul.
